Football Tournament

16 August 2022

Scoring goals was no trouble for the Gonville team at Tuesday’s Football Tournament. Throughout the day six matches of twenty minutes were played. Wembley Park played host to school teams from all over Whanganui. No half time in the matches meant it was busy. Players got a rest between games though, and a chance to watch some of the other schools play.

After a shaky 2-nil loss first up, the team went away and worked out a strategy and positions for players. The structure not only looked much more organised, but worked. Max provided some strong resistance in goal, and Cameron led a defensive line moving the team up and down the field as a unit. Elijah had what could only be called net fever, he just wanted to send the ball to the back of the net, and did so many times.

Gonville went on to beat St Mary’s, Carlton, and Westmere before a respectable defeat to St Georges. The day finished with a draw to St Anne’s, as both teams began to tire. Our Gonville kids never gave up, kept running hard all day, and finding ways to put our own players in space. Huge well done to Khalijah, Sylas, Max, Reyne, Akeeliah, Deklann, Lilee, Cameron, Elijah, and Josiah.

In addition to the kids doing amazingly well, we also had a strong crew of parents that came along to support. They added to the positive and supportive environment we enjoyed on the sideline. We finished up 3rd out of seven.

Results: Faith (L) 0-2, St Mary’s (W) 2-0, Carlton (W) 5-0, Westmere (W) 1-0, St Georges (L) 0-3, St Anne’s (D) 1-1.
